If you have a few different things going on with your mouth, your dentist may recommend full mouth reconstruction as a solution. The name may sound dramatic, but it is actually just a combination of restorative and cosmetic procedures to help you achieve a healthier smile that makes you feel confident. Just like with any procedure, there is a recovery period. Here is what you can expect when recovering from different procedures.
Dental Fillings
Dental fillings are used to repair teeth that have mild to moderate decay or damage. Most of the time, fillings can be completed in a single appointment. After your procedure, you can return to your normal activities right away, but it may take about an hour or so for your local anesthetic to wear off, so you should refrain from eating until then.
CEREC Dental Crowns
Dental crown usually takes two visits to the dental office to complete. However, with CEREC, you can get a new dental crown in a single appointment at the dental office. You may experience some sensitivity for a couple days following your procedure, but this is temporary and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.
Root Canal Treatment
Root canal treatment is necessary when the pulp of a tooth becomes infected. During this process, your dentist will remove the nerves and blood vessels form inside the tooth, disinfect the area, and seal it with a filling. In many cases, a dental crown is also added for extra protection. Following this procedure, many patients notice sensitivity in the tissue around the tooth as well as some minor inflammation. These side effects will go away after a few days.
Tooth Extractions
Extracting a tooth is never your dentist’s first choice, but sometimes this is necessary to preserve the health of the rest of your smile. After your extraction, it can take a few days for the gum tissue to close back up over the socket where your tooth was. Most of the time, patients can return to their normal schedule after three to five days. Take recommended over-the-counter and prescribed medications and get plenty of sleep.
Dental Implants
Dental implants are the best tooth replacement option out there. Titanium, screw-like implants are surgically placed into the jawbone. They take about three to six months to fully integrate with the jawbone in a process called osseointegration. However, patients can usually return to their normal activities after a few days.
Your dental team will provide you with detailed instructions for whichever treatment you need. By closely following them, your smile will be good as new in no time!
